A 46-year-old cleaner at a Limpopo hospital was arrested on Sunday for allegedly sodomising another man in a hospital toilet.

The man was arrested at work after the incident. He is expected to face charges of sodomy in the Waterval magistrate's court today.

Limpopo police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the victim had first approached the alleged "rapist" at the Elim Hospital near Louis Trichardt, looking for a job.

"The victim found the suspect working in the hospital yard a week before the incident and asked for a job. The suspect allegedly told him to come the following week to fill in forms.

"When the victim came to honour his appointment, the suspect lured him into the toilet where he allegedly told him he was going to help him fill in the forms. Instead he was allegedly forced to undress," Ramatseba said.

The suspect told the victim to comply if he wanted to be employed. He then sodomised the man several times. When the victim asked him about the application forms, the suspect did not give him a clear answer.

The suspect told the victim to wait in the toilet while he fetched the forms but he never came back.

When he realised the man was not coming back, the victim, whose name is known to Sowetan, went to the police station where he opened a case of sodomy.

"The suspect was arrested the same day and charged with sodomy," Ramatseba said.

The incident happened three weeks after a senior nurse at Sekororo Hospital near Tzaneen was raped at the nurses' residence. A week later another nursing sister at the hospital was attacked at the same residence.

These incidents highlight the chronic shortage of security at Limpopo hospitals.

Limpopo health department spokesman Phuti Seloba promised to investigate. He said heads will roll if any health department employees are involved.
