Piece of heaven

One day when I finally prepare myself to meet my Maker, I will run through the list of things I have loved most about my life and one of them would be the gift of travel. And Kievits Kroon would be the picture in my mind.

One day when I finally prepare myself to meet my Maker, I will run through the list of things I have loved most about my life and one of them would be the gift of travel. And Kievits Kroon would be the picture in my mind.

The perfect break does not necessarily mean travelling long distances and spending a lot of money to get there.

Kievits Kroon is on the outskirts of Pretoria. Nestled in the tranquil beauty of the Kameeldrift Valley, it is only 40 minutes from Johannesburg and 10 minutes from central Pretoria. I couldn't have asked for a better Valentine's Day present.

This time I travelled with my insane friends and enjoyed showing off my contacts, as well as my authority.

They almost fainted at the size of the Cape Dutch semi-colony. The 12 hectares of land allow each guest to feel as if he or she partly owns the place, thanks to backyard gardens and lush landscape. When we checked in and my friends saw the spacious and luxury rooms, I was immediately ordained duchess of the brotherhood.

The rooms ooze hospitality as thatched colonial style meets modern luxury. Since we had arrived at dusk, the rooms were so inviting and I could have jumped in if it was not for the beckoning rendezvous at the Lord Charles Restaurant.

Because we did not have confirmation at the Lord Charles and I was panicking about my newly-found title, I almost pleaded with the staff to upgrade us from Kingsley's to Lord Charles. How could they refuse?

We were quickly seated and taken through the menu fit for aficionados before our Merlot arrived. In the background lingered soothing sounds, quiet laughter and the sounds of crockery and cutlery.

My friends marvelled at the soothing sound of water from the lake-like pool, the space between the rooms and, of course, the diligent service of staff at the restaurant.

"I've been to numerous five-star places all over the world, but I have never been fussed over like this," fawned one grateful voter.

And that song would be repeated as we enjoyed our succulent starters, the palette overhauling sorbet with strawberry and piquant main course of a variety of dishes. I chose ostrich while my friends opted for fish and beef.

As I finally hit my pillow, with all thoughts of naughty nature behind me, I made an excuse not to rise to the occasion the next morning.

With bedding so crisp and the mood so mellow, it was inevitable that we would wake up late. I woke up thinking: Did I miss my famous signature massage, did I really miss it? It turned out that I had. My spirit plummeted. I had missed out on the most calming surroundings, the best smoothie in town, beautifully created low lighting, my full body massage and reading material that should have left me with a perfect skin tone and mood.

But I was soon my old-self again when I spotted my friends savouring the buffet breakfast. We enjoyed the healthiest and most delicious fruits, yoghurt and low fat English breakfast.

While everyone was still raving about the supreme service, I asked them if they would be returning. The darkies say that if Kievits Kroon's is not heaven, there's a big conspiracy to conceal the fact.

"I will certainly be asking my company to bring us here for our next conference," one of my friends said.

Kievits Kroon's natural beauty is complemented by state-of-the-art conference facilities with a vast range of superior technical equipment. The stately executive boardroom and the 12 superbly-designed conference rooms can comfortably accommodate groups ranging from 10 to 150 delegates in various seating configurations, allowing for a maximum of 350 delegates at any given time.

As for me, I even tried flirting with managing director Alan O'Leary, who was so hung up on us that he saw nothing in my eye moves.

Could it be that wrong to flirt with hospitality? Oh well.
