A 20-year-old man from the rural village of GaMaake outside Tzaneen, Limpopo, has been arrested in connection with the brutal killing of his father at the weekend.

The incident happened on Saturday night when the 67-year-old father tried to plead with his son, who was playing music loudly in the house.

The father wanted to sleep.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the son was with his girlfriend in the house when the incident happened.

He said the elderly man was asleep when the couple returned home, apparently from a drinking binge in the vicinity.

Ramatseba said trouble started when the father woke up and ordered the couple to switch off the music.

He also confiscated the discs the couple were still intending to play and put them in his bedroom.

"The suspect became enraged and allegedly started assaulting his father," said Ramatseba.

He said the father was knocked down and his son allegedly continued kicking and assaulting him until he lost consciousness.

"When he realised that his father was no longer breathing, the suspect poured cold water over him, trying to resuscitate him.

"But the elderly man had died," Ramatseba said.

The police superintendent said the son then dumped the father's body along a main road to make it look as though he had been knocked down by a car.

"However, alert motorists noticed the body and informed the police," Ramatseba said.

The suspect will appear in the Naphuno magistrate's court on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
