The Fish River Sun Hotel and Country Club, which hosted the R1,2 million Africa Open Golf Challenge, has adopted the Nomzamo Special Care Centre and Masibambisane Primary School, offering the two assistance where they can.

The centre is an educational and skills establishment for the physically and mentally disabled children based at Peddie, a small rural town in the Eastern Cape.

The hotel donated beds, blankets, sheets, curtains, food stuffs and sewing material to the centre after the Charity Golf Day they held at the Fish River golf course recently.

The hotel's manager Wessel Benson said they were keen to hold golf events to enable them to assist the needy in the Eastern Cape. He added that some of the players had promised to donate golf shirts to the centre when the golf challenge ends.

Food and beverage manager Siphokazi Memani said the centre did not receive any financial help from the government hence her company came on board to assist with donations.

"Nomzamo Special Care Centre is our baby and we'll continue to assist the school with donations. We have also asked some of our staff members to go and clean and paint the centre," she said.

"We have recently adopted Masibambisane Primary School because most of the pupils there are keen to be caddies and golfers. We're also going to donate blankets to a hospice at Hamburg near Port Elizabeth soon."

The centre's caretaker Lizzie Holane said they had 74 children with ages ranging from three to 18, and 34 of them are the daily pupils and the rest are permanent residents.
