The first ever sexual health and lifestyle Sexpo show had its launch at the Durban International Conventional Centre yesterday.
Visitors paid R100 to shop at a range of sex stalls based in South Africa and abroad.
Although the show attracted a mainly white audience, organisers were hopeful that other race groups would arrive at the weekend.
Black women visitors told Sowetan it would take some time before black people felt comfortable enough to visit exhibitions like these.
"Most black people are private with their sex lives," said one.
Another said it was the first time she had attended a show like this.
"I have bought a handful of stuff to spice up my sex life and I cannot wait to try them out with my partner," she said.
The stalls exhibited items ranging from sex toys to porn DVDs and scented oils.
Most visitors said the show came at a perfect time as it was close to Valentine's Day.
An Australian artist, Tim Patch "Pricasso", caught everyone's attention with his use of his private parts to paint their portraits.
The show, which will include a striptease event, closes on Sunday.
