Police are still searching for a suspect or suspects who shot dead a Durban businesswoman who was a key witness in a fraud and corruption case.

The case involves fraud of more than R10 million and several KwaZulu-Natal department of transport officials.

Futhi Ngcwane, 38, was shot at point-blank range at her home at Mariannhill Park in Pinetown in front of her two children a month ago.

Her family believes she was killed "to silence her" because she knew too much about the high-profile fraud and corruption case.

According to the family, Ngcwane had previously received death threats from individuals who were trying to force her "to change a statement" she had made to the police about the case.

Her family told Sowetan that Ngcwane did not receive any protection from the police although she was a key witness in the case.

Police spokesman Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said the matter "was very sensitive".

"Police are currently following all the necessary leads that will lead to the arrest of the alleged murderer.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.

"The police are treating this case as a top priority," he said.

Mngomezulu urged members of the public to come forward with any information they might have that could lead to the arrest of the murder suspect or suspects.
