Policeman kills police girlfriend, takes own life
A police inspector attached to the Thohoyandou uniform branch in Limpopo yesterday shot dead his girlfriend before taking his own life.
Police said the incident happened about midday yesterday at the couple's home in Magonya village near Giyani.
The couple allegedly had an argument before the shooting incident.
Giyani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said the woman, 28, who worked as a police constable attached to the Ritavi police station near Tzaneen, was shot once in the chest. She died instantly.
He said the man apparently shot himself in the head.
"We received information around midday yesterday about shots that were heard from a house in Magonya village and we went to investigate," said Ngoepe.
He said they found the two bodies lying in a pool of blood in the house.
"Upon investigation we discovered that the two were our own members though they were based at different stations," he said.
"Judging by the way we found the two in the house there is no doubt that there was a struggle prior to the shooting.
"Everything was scattered about in the house," said Ngoepe.
The motive for the shooting was still unknown and investigations were continuing, he said.
"We can only suspect that a domestic dispute is what led to the killings.
"In the same breadth, we want to urge our members to consult the relevant structures or trained counsellors who are capable of dealing with the domestic problems couples are experiencing.
"We will also take it upon ourselves to make sure we educate our members on how to deal with difficult situations rather than resort to killing one another," said Ngoepe.
He said losing two officers at one go was really a traumatic experience.
"But members of the public who still want to join the police service should not be discouraged by such killings," he said.
He said the names of the deceased would not be released until their relatives had been notified.
