Closing liquor outlets on Sundays will not stop people from drinking on that day. All they would do is to buy enough alcohol on Saturday and carry on with their drinking lives on Sundays.
If Mbalula has a problem with liquor, I would advise him to emigrate to a country where he will not even see a sign advertising liquor.
South Africa would become like Zimbabwe if liquor sales are curbed. We would have the fastest-shrinking economy outside a war zone, and also the weakest currency. Reducing liquor stores trading hours would affect small businesses like taverns, which in turn would have a negative effect on our economy. Government encourages people to start their own business to survive and selling liquor is one way black people are doing so.
I have nothing against Mbalula, but most of the issues he raises are irrelevant. Every time he voices an opinion, my colleagues, friends and I check if he has raised a responsible issue. We wonder if he will ever grow up politically?
His proposal disrespects the cabinet, ministers, other government officials and worst of all, the president.
