Rita Kabula has had a hard time trying to educate her five sons.
She is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo who came to South Africa after her husband, a soldier, was killed in the civil war in her homeland.
Four of her sons - Hanathan in Grade 9, Jay in Grade 7, Simpho in Grade 4 and Luc in Grade 2 - attend schools in Johannesburg. They speak Swahili and French fluently and are now learning English and Zulu.
Kabula, who has a heart condition, had a thriving business hawking slippers in the CBD until her stock was confiscated during a raid.
She now subsists on a food parcel she receives once a month from her church.
Michelle Coetzee, a member of the St Vincent de Paul Society at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Braamfontein, asked Mama Angel for assistance for Kabula. She said the little money she gets is spent on her medication.
Mama Angel bought the four boys school uniforms and jerseys and stationery. Her children thanked Sowetan for giving them new uniforms. "God bless you and thank you very much. Jonathan will cry when he sees his new clothes," Kabula said.
Kabula lives in a one-room shelter and needs a place for herself and the children to stay.
