Len Hunt, pictured, is the new vice president of the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) in Africa.
Ed Levine, president of the boxing sanctioning organisation, broke the news to Hunt last week.
"I was delighted when he told me that I had been appointed in a meeting of the board of shareholders last week," said Hunt, whose main function will be to supervise all IBO fights in Africa.
The retired referee and judge was in charge of the IBO bantamweight title fight last weekend between holder Silence Mabuza and vanquished challenger Eden Sonsona of the Philippines at Emperors Palace.
"It's great that I am working with people that I know at BSA," said the soft-spoken, bespectacled 70-year-old official who served boxing here as a judge and referee with aplomb for almost 40 years.
Hunt retired on November 27 last year after officiating in the fight for the South African light heavyweight belt between Soon Botes and Dingaan Thobela.
"Boxing is in my blood. You cannot get it out. I would like to try and extend the IBO to more countries in Africa."
Hunt realised his ambition of officiating in a world title fight on September 1 2000, when Sebastiaan Rothmann defended the WBU cruiserweight title against Kelly Oliver.
