The escape by five awaiting trial prisoners from Bizana Prison in Eastern Cape has triggered a probe into prison officials who could face the axe if found guilty.

The escape by five awaiting trial prisoners from Bizana Prison in Eastern Cape has triggered a probe into prison officials who could face the axe if found guilty.

Two of the inmates were rearrested shortly after the escape on Friday. The other inmates still at large are wanted for several murder and armed robbery offences, including the killing of a policeman.

Police spokesman Mduduzi Godlwana said the inmates overpowered a warden during lunch-time and made a run for it. "They grabbed him and confiscated keys to make their way out. The investigation is under way to see if other officials assisted in the break."

Correctional services spokesman Zukisa Ndumani could not reveal how many officials were being investigated. - Kamva Mokoena
