Police say they have have made an important breakthrough in their fight against criminals operating in areas surrounding KwaMashu.
Police officers arrested nine men on Monday linked to a number of robberies and murders around the KwaMashu Men's Hostel.
Police said the hostel has become a haven for hard-core criminals.
Since the arrest of the men, police say that there have been no criminal acts reported in the area.
The men are believed to be members of a gang that operated from KwaMashu and Lindelani.
The arrested suspects, who cannot be named until they appear in court today, were arrested in different parts of the hostel during a joint raid by the National Intervention Force and the local police.
The raid was held in search of four suspects linked to the murder of two brothers who owned a tuck shop in Lindelani township.
The brothers, Simphiwe Mkhize, 22, and Zamokwakhe, 25, were shot to death.
Four robbers stole R20000 in cash and an undisclosed amount of airtime vouchers kept at their tuck shop.
Both brothers were shot in the head and died at the scene of the crime.
Police spokesman Siwe Nxumalo said investigations into the double murder led police to the KwaMashu Men's Hostel, where they arrested four men connected to the killing of the Mkhize brothers.
"Upon searching the homes of the suspects, police found bloody clothes believed to have been worn by the men on the night that the Mkhize brothers were killed, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash - allegedly including the R20000 stolen from the Mkhizes' tuck shop," Nxumalo said.
Five other men, suspected of involvement in criminal activities, were also arrested on the same night.
Nxumalo said the arrests would contribute to the decrease in the rate of crime in the area surrounding the hostel.
