Zanele Buthelezi says that the chance to pursue a solo music career came quicker than she had expected. She is enjoying it.
The 21-year-old Mofolo, Soweto, artist is excited now that her solo career has really taken off. Known as Zanele in the music fraternity, Buthelezi said she was in no hurry to rush her career.
"I decided that I wouldn't put pressure on myself and would work in a group for the experience. So I was surprised that a company wanted to sign me on as a solo artist," Buthelezi said. Her debut album is called Let me Love you.
She said going solo was scary. "When you work with a group, you share the criticism."
Let Me Love You, which is a fusion of Afro-pop, kwaito and R&B, was released late last year. Her sound is versatile and fresh.
"Music is like gambling. You won't know if people will like your style until you try it."
Buthelezi is inspired by the simple things in life. She started dancing with trainer Cleopatra Phiki at the age of eight.
During the last 10 years, Buthelezi performed with Storm Dancers and other Soweto groups. She also danced and sang in the popular musical Umoja.
