PE launches railway police

The Eastern Cape provincial government will launch a railway police unit in Port Elizabeth on Monday as part of their preparations for the 2010 World Cup where 1000 law enforcement officers will be on patrol at various stations in the area.

Thobile Mhlahlo, pictured, Eastern Cape MEC for safety, liaison, roads and transport, will preside over events.

"Eastern Cape is the last province to establish a railway police unit, which has contact points in Mount Ruth in Mdantsane, East London and Swartkops in Port Elizabeth manned by a total of 125 members," said Ncedo Kumbaca, the department's spokesman.

Mhlahlo will start by greeting commuters at Port Elizabeth Down Station.
