Mpumalanga police have made a breakthrough by arresting a Pakistani national who was found in possession of a laptop that had been stolen from tourists during a recent armed robbery.

The man was arrested at Thulamahashe township near Bushbuckridge, a day after the police cornered and arrested three men believed to have attacked tourists and game lodges last month.

Police said the three men were involved in the shooting of two tourists near the Open Gate of Kruger National Park.

The two victims were driving towards the gate when they saw two men armed with rifles and who suddenly fired shots at their car.

One of the victims was shot in the left arm and leg, but the driver continued driving away in a bid to escape the attack.

Shortly before the incident, three men had stolen three firearms and a laptop during two separate armed robberies at two private game lodges in the Hoedspruit area of Limpopo.

The head of investigations of the Mhala police, Superintendent Boy Dlamini, followed information that the three robbers had been hiding in Komatipoort and had illegally crossed the border into Mozambique.

"The superintendent was also informed of the day the suspects were to return to the country. He took a group of his dedicated policemen to Komatipoort where they would ambush the suspects in the early hours of Monday morning," Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said yesterday.

He said the police found two of the men sleeping outside the house, apparently because they were feeling hot inside the house.

"They woke up the unsuspecting men, who then took them into the house where a third suspect was sleeping. Three rifles that were stolen from two game lodges were found in the house," said Khoabane.

He said the men confessed to selling a laptop they had stolen from a private game lodge to a Pakistani man who lived at Thulamahashe.

Investigations led to the Pakistani national who was found in possession of the stolen laptop and he was also arrested.
