A playful day at a creche in Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands ended on a tragic note when three-year-old Luthando Mkhize was found floating in a swimming pool.
The caretakers at the Little Stepping Stone Day Care Centre in Orient Heights discovered on Monday that the boy was missing from the rest of the group.
A search for him immediately ensued.
He died on his way to hospital.
The creche management yesterday declined to speak to the Sowetan.
Also on Monday, municipal workers discovered a foetus in a sewer in the residential suburb of Belfort, Pietermaritzburg.
The workers had been called to repair a blockage in the water pipes.
