Bafana to display Afcon star

In a case of "better late than never", the South African Fooball Association will have a star crocheted on Bafana Bafana jerseys soon.

This will be the case in all their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaigns. Safa president Molefi Oliphant said the star would be recognition of the fact that Bafana Bafana won the 1996 Afcon tournament.

"I have observed it here in the tournament in Ghana that teams are proud to display their achievements of winning this prestigious event. We should also have it [star]. Safa will sit down to decide on the matter," said Oliphant.

Some people perceive a star on the jersey as a good motivator to the players because it is also supposed to intimidate opposition teams that don't have it.

Winning the Afcon is a feat that most countries affiliated to the Confederation of African Football dream of, only to return home empty-handed.

It is why those who succeed often proudly show off their achievement with stars on their jerseys.

Five-time winners Egypt proudly display the five stars that denotes their feat over the years, as shown in the picture.

The Black Stars of current Afcon hosts, Ghana, and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, who meet in a semifinal match at Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra tomorrow, have four stars each.

At club level, Orlando Pirates also have one golden star on their jerseys after winning the African Champions League title in 1995.

l Bafana Bafana look set to play Portugal in an international friendly in Europe on March 26.
