The closing date for entries to the 2008 Absa and Sowetan Early Childhood Development (ECD) Awards is February 29.

The closing date for entries to the 2008 Absa and Sowetan Early Childhood Development (ECD) Awards is February 29.

Sowetan and Absa are organising the awards with the South African Congress for Early Childhood Development, Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, the Education Department, Office of the Rights of the Child in the Presidency and SABC Education.

Nominate yourself or anyone else The categories are:

l ECD practitioner of the year;

l Home-based care centre of the year;

l Community-based care centre of the year;

l Resource and training centre of the year.

The 2007 winners were:

l Practitioners category. Winner is Masesi Winnie Nsimbini of Mpumalanga, the first and second runners-up are Bochilo Lina Maake of Limpopo and Simangele Mpumzana of KwaZulu-Natal. Elizabeth Manyane of Gauteng and Irene Pitso of North West won merit awards.

l Top home-based centres are Tinhlari in Limpopo, Sinethemba in Gauteng and Makukhonwe in Eastern Cape.

l Best community-based centres are Ithuseng Pre-school in Mpumalanga, Khulakahle David Beares ECD Centre in KwaZulu-Natal, Nelly's Day Care Centre in Gauteng. Tirisano Day Care Centre won a merit award.

l Tree in KwaZulu-Natal won the resource and training category. Second spot was shared by Peepps ECD Training in Limpopo and Centre for Social Development in Eastern Cape. Third place went to Free State's Ntataise Trust. Ipopeng Early Learning Organisation from Northern Cape won a merit award.
