A 27-year-old man - believed to be a serial rapist and murderer - has been arrested in Mpumalanga following a massive police hunt.

The man, nicknamed "Mazambane" - and feared by inhabitants in the Mkhuhlu area, was arrested at the Machado Plaza along the N4 on Saturday.

Police believe he was trying to escape to Gauteng after realising that the police were on his trail.

Police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said although the man was a suspect in a number of cases involving rape and murder, the police still had to positively link him to the crimes.

"We are calling upon members of the community with any information relating to his criminal activities to come forward," said Khoabane.

Police did, however, confirm that Mazambane had been positively linked to the rape and murder of a relative of his - whom he reportedly strangled in an unused house in December.

An angry crowd yesterday descended on the Calcutta police station, demanding that police hand him over to them so they could mete out "street justice".

They later dispersed after police made it clear that the law would have to take its course.
