The Limpopo Youth Commission (LYC) said yesterday it was disturbed by the state of affairs in most schools in the province.

This follows recent visits to various schools which performed badly in last year's matric exams.

LYC chairman Rodgers Tshivhase said conditions under which pupils were taught at several schools they visited were not conducive for convincing matric pass rates.

"We are happy to have conducted visits to the schools as that gave us an opportunity to see for ourselves the unhealthy situations in various schools," Tshivhase said.

He said in most schools they found pupils congested in one classroom, thereby making things difficult even for teachers to move around during lessons.

"Another reason that results in a high failure rate is the fact that some pupils still have to walk long distances to school. It will be expected of them to be exhausted when they reach their respective schools. But we are engaging with the department of education to ensure that schools are easily accessible to pupils," he said.

The LYC visited the schools to establish the challenges faced by pupils and also to promote a culture of learning.

It also involved popular comedian and radio presenter DJ Shabba Muleya, who motivated pupils and encouraged them to follow the path towards success.
