A group of high-ranking police officers dressed immaculately in suits were at on hand to support national police Commissioner Jackie Selebi when he appeared in the Randburg magistrate's court on Friday.

Responding to Sowetan, national police spokesman Sally De Beer said yesterday there was absolutely nothing wrong with officers showing support for their chief.

The officers formed a "guard of honour" and waited in turn to greet Selebi as he walked into court.

"Selebi has not been found guilty, and he is still the employee of the state,"said Popcru spokesman Benzi Soko.

"He is still regarded by officers as their chief of staff."

Soko said he did not know who had motivated the police to openly show their support for Selebi, who is facing charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

"It could have been a decision taken by individuals," he said.

De Beer said that since courts were open to members of the public, anyone could attend proceedings.

"There is nothing wrong for officers to line up to greet the commissioner before he appears in court," she said.

De Beer could not confirm whether the police officers took a day's leave to be in court.

Among the top cops who came to support Selebi was Gauteng Commissioner Perumal Naidoo.

A smart-looking Selebi, appearing confident, was released on warning.
