Customers dived for cover behind grocery shelves or ran for their lives when nine heavily-armed robbers, firing shots wildly, stormed a store in Kloof, Durban, at the weekend.
Two cash-in-transit guards were held up at the store and a cashier was shot and wounded. The gunmen struck while the security guards were collecting six cash boxes at the Maytime Spar on Saturday.
One eye-witness said: "I was reading a newspaper when an A3 Audi parked next to my vehicle. I saw people running out of the store, screaming.
"I then heard gun shots and hid behind my car. I saw two men, both armed with guns, jump into the vehicle next to mine and speed off."
Captain Deborah O'Brien said the Coin Security guards were intercepted by robbers armed with pistols and rifles.
"The guards were carrying three cash boxes when they were attacked. The suspects shot randomly and a cashier was hit in the process. The suspects took boxes containing an undisclosed amount of cash and a pistol from one of the guards," O'Brien said.
She said one of the guards opened fire on the suspects while they were running away with the cash boxes, but the suspects managed to get away.
They fled in three vehicles - a Silver Audi, a gold Pajero and a silver Toyota Run-X. No one has been arrested.

The arrest came after four armed men allegedly stormed a house in Lennoxton and demanded money. The men took a bank card from the owner but were given the wrong code.
They returned to the house and "forcibly obtained" the right code. They then tied the owner up and locked him in a toilet. He managed to escape and called the police, said Captain Shooz Magudulela.
Two of the suspects, who stole several electrical appliances, fled in the man's vehicle.
