The family of a four-month-old baby who died after being bitten by a rat at the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban have thanked the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) for helping to bury their child.

Little Nkosingiphile Cwera, who died a week ago, was buried on Saturday.

Sowetan published an article last week in which a shack dwellers organisation appealed for help. It also criticised the eThekwini municipality for not assisting the destitute family.

The municipality said they could only help "if asked to do so".

The baby's father, Mfundiseni Cwera, 25, said yesterday that his child had finally received a "dignified burial" with the help of IFP chairman Zanele Magwaza-Msibi who collected R5000 towards the baby's funeral.
