Residents at Molweni - near Hillcrest in Durban - are living in fear after two cousins were shot dead for their cellphones on Friday night.

Nhlakanipho Sithole, 17, and his cousin Nkosi Hlongwane, 26, were on their way to the local shop when they were confronted by robbers.

A scuffle broke out between the victims and their attackers and the gunmen opened fire on the two cousins.

A community spokesman, who did not want his name published, said: "We are living in fear. Killing someone for a cellphone is shocking. We hope police will do their job and get these criminals.

"There has been an increase of crime in the area. We are being held hostage by criminals and don't dare leave our homes after 7pm."

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said Hlongwane was declared dead at the scene while his cousin, Sithole, died later in hospital.

Police spokesman superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said Hlongwane and Sithole were shot in the head.

Police are investigating two cases of murder.
