North West police arrested more than 9000 people during a crime prevention operation lasting three months, police said yesterday.

North West police arrested more than 9000 people during a crime prevention operation lasting three months, police said yesterday.

Superintendent Louis Jacobs said a crime prevention operational plan was put in place in October in the build-up to the festive season.

Additional operations were maintained until the finalisation of the operation yesterday. "For the period in question, 9185 people were arrested. A staggering 4472 of them in connection with serious crimes," said Jacobs.

Among those arrested were 2046 people for violent crimes.

These include murder, attempted murder, rape and attempted rape, robbery, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and indecent assault. -
