A multiparty committee has been set up to investigate the mayor of Rustenburg, Mathew Wolmarans, the municipality said yesterday.

Municipal manager Andries Boschoff said a motion of no-confidence was passed against the mayor on Tuesday during a council meeting.

The council resolved that a multiparty committee be established to investigate allegations against Wolmarans.

These are that proper procedures were not followed in the appointment of staff and disposal of land, and in regard to a stolen council vehicle.

The committee is expected to report to council in two weeks time at a special council meeting.

Boschoff said the delegating powers of the mayor were withdrawn, though he remained an executive mayor as stipulated in legislation.

If the committee found any basis to the allegations against the mayor the matter would be referred to a disciplinary committee, Boschoff said.

On January 15, the municipality issued a statement in which it said there were plots to overthrow the mayor and dismiss the municipal manager.

"The Rustenburg municipality views in a serious light the alleged plot by some individuals to overthrow the executive mayor and to expel the municipal manager. The matter has been referred to the relevant structures of the ANC," the statement said. - Sapa
