Convicted kidnapper Jackey Maarohanye is suing Sowetan for more than R3million for defamation.

The lawsuit stems from a storySowetan published in February last year.

The story had likened her to convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik, who was taken to hospital instead of prison after allegedly falling ill.

In a scene reminiscent of the Shaik saga, Mama Jackey was taken to hospital instead of jail.

She had collapsed in a police cell at the Protea magistrate's court before she was taken to Kliptown police station.

She was briefly examined at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital and then taken back to the police station.

Her court appearance had related to the alleged kidnapping and assault of Sowetan reporter Vusi Ndlovu.

She was acquitted on these charges.

But on November 12 last year, she was found guilty in the Protea magistrate's court on two counts of kidnapping.

She was convicted for her involvement in the kidnapping of Simphiwe Ngcogutu, a former pupil of her controversial Ithuteng Trust school in Klipspruit.

She is awaiting sentence.

And now Mama Jackey is suing the newspaper, claiming the paper had damaged her reputation and dignity. Sowetan has briefed its lawyers to challenge the action.
