Another ID bungle by the Department of Home Affairs involving two men - who share the same name, middle name and surname but born in different provinces - has emerged.

They have different dates of birth but share the same identity document number.

Simon Boy Sibiya, of KwaZulu-Natal, was born in 1961, and Simon Boy Sibiya, of Mpumalanga, was born in 1966.

However, both share ID number 660610 5333 080.

Sibiya's ID was issued in Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga, in 1986, while the KZN document was issued in Richards Bay in 1996.

The Richards Bay issue seems to have caused all the trouble as it effectively replaced the Mpumalanga Sibiya's ID number.

The two men used the same ID number until last week when they finally met at the Pretoria offices of the department.

Spokesman Mantshele Tau said the department was "treating the matter as high priority".

Sibiya of Mpumalanga discovered that he shared an ID number with another person in 2003 when he applied to convert his driver's licence to the smart card.

"I was surprised to learn that I have a car and that I must first renew my licence. I did not have a car at the time."
