A Mpumalanga man who was tortured before being doused with fuel and set alight, has died in the Middelburg Hospital.

David Thwala, age not available, an employee of Highveld Bricks in Middelburg, died of severe burns and assault injuries in hospital yesterday.

The burns and injures were allegedly inflicted by five men and a woman.

The six allegedly accused him of having stolen their car battery on Sunday.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane of Mpumalanga provincial police said six people had been arrested but only two had been charged with attempted murder.

Khoabane said that after Thwala's death, the charge was changed to murder and the two men appeared in court late on Tuesday.

Their case was postponed to Monday for further police investigation.

The other four suspects, who had been released earlier, were re-arrested.

They appeared in the Middelburg magistrate's court on murder charges yesterday.
