Police in Vereeniging took to the streets yesterday to keep the town clean.
The 27 officers - ranked between constable and captain - with refuse bags in hands, began picking up litter from Vereeniging police station and ended up at the main Voortrekker Street in the town centre.
The campaign was a highlight of National Police Week activities.
Police spokesman Captain Shado Mashobane said: "We went on a cleaning campaign to show our commitment to the public, especially the people that we serve."
He said their duty was not only to protect residents and arrest criminals.
They also wanted to encourage people to stop littering.
The annual campaign started on Sunday.
Mashobane said the public was invited on Sunday to the Arcon Park Baptist Church together with the widows and children of police officers who had died on the line of duty.
"They will always be part of our police station even though their loved ones are no longer with us. We want to show them that they are very important to us."
Today the police will parade in the streets of Vereeniging.
Meanwhile, Sebokeng police also held a commemoration service at Saul Tsotetsi hall in the township for their fallen heroes who died while serving the community.
