The spotlight falls on young South African filmmakers in Holland, who are showcasing their skills at a prestigious international film festival.
A selection of films by South African filmmakers called South African Project, The Commandments, was launched on Monday at the Rotterdam CineMart Film Festival.
The films have been made possible by the financial backing of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) in partnership with the SABC and International Development Centre - Binger Filmlab.
These films are being showcased at the 25th edition of international co-production, Market CineMart.
This is a ground-breaking feature film and single play project focusing on the new generation of South African filmmakers.
The directors, producers and project partners, who are now creating this collection of 10 films, are now in Holland at the festival. The films - five feature films and five single plays - explore the codes and rules that govern culture and society.
The Commandments project has secured the very best of South African writers, directors and producers, who at the moment are working towards building a new national cinema.
The talent assembled has been nominated and awarded worldwide. Furthermore, their previous work has been selected and screened at every major festival around the world.
The Commandments filmmakers and their films are: Gilli Apter (Joseph), Matthew A Brown, (Flawed Life), Nozizwe Ginindza (Marula Tree), Tristan Holmes (Hidden Garden), Norman Maake (Blood Down Claim Street), Teddy Mattera (Gees), Jean and Zinaid Meeran (Gazelle 911), Akiedah Mohamed (Belly Dancing and the Art of Catching Stars on Water), Nicky Newman (Lucky Lady), Busi Ntintili and Khalo Matabane (Road to Khumbula).
"Finding the inherent gems within the filmmaking community of South Africa and supplying enough resources to polish those stories into precious tales has been the best part of the process so far," said Ryan Haidarian, head of production and development at the NFVF.
Khethiwe Ngcobo, SABC's head of drama content hub, said this about the project: "As the SABC, we are very pleased to work with our current partners, NFVF, Binger Filmlab and International Film Festival Rotterdam, who together are spearheading this prestigious project.
"The Commandments is the first large-scale fiction initiative that has been undertaken to showcase South African talent both locally and internationally. We believe this project is an ideal vehicle for those wanting to partner with South Africa."
