There are secrets to success in a writing career, but first define what success means to you.

There are secrets to success in a writing career, but first define what success means to you.

Once you are sure, pursue it as you have defined it, not as others have. Success is about what you want, not what others think is good for you.

Love what you do for a living. Writer and actor Noel Coward once said: "Work is more fun than fun."

Find the link between your passion and the needs of the market. Ask yourself what is it that you like that also interests other people. It has to be something they are willing to pay for.

Be the best. Work tirelessly to increase your skills and knowledge. To improve your writing, write a lot and read widely.

Decide what you want to specialise in. It is better to be a master of a niche of the market, than trying to master the whole market.

Keep adding to your knowledge and experience in the fields you write about. Show great skill and flair and give every job your best. Never take short cuts simply because you agreed to short money.

Your clients expect and deserve only the best. Always be a client's ally and partner, not an adversary.

Never undercharge or overcharge. Charge what you are worth and make sure you get paid. If you doubt that a client will pay you, get the money upfront. A retainer cheque for half the amount is the quickest way to separate serious clients from time-wasting ones.

Don't waste time with things that are pleasant or entertaining, but do not help achieve your goals. Value your time and treat it as the only precious resource you have to make a living.
