The ANC branches in KwaZulu-Natal have endorsed newly elected NEC member, Zweli Mkhize, as the party's new provincial chairman, in a move seen as snubbing current chairman and premier, Sbu Ndebele.

Mkhize, a well-known Zuma supporter, shot to stardom with his election to the NEC.

He also heads the education and health committee at the national working committee level.

James Nxumalo, eThekwini region spokesman, said yesterday that Mkhize appears to be the right person to lead the party in the province.

He said the nominations have not even officially started as the provincial executive committee (PEC) is still to meet.

Ricardo Mthembu, secretary of the KwaDukuza region, said they would endorse Mkhize's name if other branches called for it.
