History has a tendency to repeat itself.

It is hardly three weeks since schools opened for this year's academic year and Khutsong, Carletonville, has already suffered class disruptions.

Grade 11 pupils at Badirile High School who failed last year protested on Friday demanding that they be allowed to move on to grade 12 this year.

School principal Goodman Babupi said he was not at school when the incident happened but received a report from the teachers.

"I heard there was fierce fighting on the premises but I don't have all the details," he said

Babupi said he would not allow pupils to dictate to the school.

He said: "We will not push them to the next grade because that would set a bad precedent.

"Teaching in South Africa is difficult but in Khutsong it is worse. The place is not conducive to teaching."

Babupi said he was demotivated but would soldier on.

"We will do our best to normalise the situation," he said.
