Councillors must be exemplary in adhering to the law.

One of the basic rules of running a good service is the implementation of a competent method of collecting rent from residents every month.

Therefore reports by the Auditor-General that more than 40 councillors including Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa were in arrears with their municipal accounts, must be cause for concern.

We wonder what action will be taken - by the respective councils - to recoup the money owed.

Councils are quick to cut water and electricity supplies to defaulters. This rule should apply to all the culprits.

In fact councillors who do not pay their municipal accounts do not deserve to be in these positions.
