A 17-year-old girl has hacked another with a panga during a fight at school on Monday morning.

The girls, both in the same Grade 9 class, apparently fought on the school premises and one of them was hacked several times on the head and body with a panga.

Police in Limpopo are investigating the matter which allegedly took place at Humula High School in Mkhomi village near Malamulele.

Inspector Alson Mapindani said the alleged hacker had accused the other pupil of "planning to attack her".

"The two had allegedly not been seeing eye-to-eye over a period of time. The victim, identified as Tinyiko Myambo, 17, has been admitted to Malamulele Hospital with serious injuries," said Mapindani.

Her condition was yesterday described as stable but that she could not speak.

According to Mapindani, the suspect - who has not been identified - allegedly hacked Myambo on the head, arms and back.

He said the suspect apparently got angry when she found Myambo talking to a friend on the school premises. The suspect apparently thought they were discussing how to attack her and decided to fight.

The suspect appeared in the Malamulele magistrate's court yesterday on charges of attempted murder. She has been referred to the Busasa Place of Safety in Polokwane until her next court appearance on February 8.

Provincial education department's spokesman Ndo Mangala reacted with shock when told of the incident yesterday. He said weapons are outlawed at all schools.

The attack on the young girl further highlighted the question of safety in schools.
