dad-in-law kills makoti
A Mpumalanga pensioner allegedly stabbed to death his daughter-in-law with an assegai during a quarrel over vegetables and chickens at the weekend.
Nduku Thomas Nkosi, 70, of Commondale in Piet Retief, was arrested for the alleged murder of Sibongile Thwala, 37, on Sunday, police said.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the two quarrelled at about 5pm when Nkosi allegedly complained to the deceased about her chickens that were feeding on his tomatoes.
In the ensuing quarrel, during which Nkosi was allegedly armed with an assegai and Thwala with an axe, the pensioner stabbed the daughter-in-law once in the chest and she collapsed.
Khoabane said the old man allegedly tried to flee the scene, but was restrained by locals who handed him over to police.
Sources close to the Piet Retief police said the old man regretted the incident, saying he only meant to scare her.
He appeared in the Piet Retief magistrate's court yesterday on a murder charge.
l In another weekend incident, a 17-year-old Mpumalanga youth fatally stabbed a 25-year-old man to death, ripping his stomach open at Kwaggafontein.
According to Khoabane, Themba Sithole's intestines were hanging out as he was rushed to the local clinic on Saturday afternoon.
He was certified dead on arrival at the clinic. The youth appeared briefly in the Mkobola magistrate's court on Monday and his case was postponed to next week for further investigations.
l At Kriel in Mpumalanga, Khoabane said Vusi Ndlovu rushed into the Super-T Tavern with his shirt covered in blood on Saturday.
Before he could say anything, he collapsed and died.
Khoabane said it was later discovered that he was shot by a man who is known in the community.
Police later arrested the man.
