I would like to know how many matriculants in the townships can read fluently?
Our children are only interested in music and entertainment. This in itself is not bad because it brings out their natural abilities. But stocking township libraries with biographies of artists and other celebrities would nurture a culture of reading in our children instead of just a desire to watch TV.
The Education Department should commission black drama writers to write stories such as Generations in book form. The Arts and Culture Department should fund such initiatives. Reading will enlighten black children. The older generation lagged behind because they were never encouraged to read, and even if they wanted to read, there were no libraries in the townships.
It's a shame to read in the newspapers that municipalities only used 25percent of the allocated R1billion for township libraries. It's sad that those in power still do not care about black children's education.
