More than five police stations in Mpumalanga within the Onderberg cluster gathered to celebrate National Police Day to remember their fellow colleagues who died in the line of duty.

Scores of high-ranking police officials and family members of the deceased officials attended. The National Police Day was declared back in 1995 under the Police Act.

Stations including Kaapmuiden, Mbuzini, Tonga and Schoemansdal, among others, took part in the event held in KaMhlushwa yesterday.

Deputy provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga Phumza Makanya-Ojowuro told Sowetan that the main aim of the day was to reflect on the successes and achievements of the SAPS and to reinforce the nation's confidence in the future of safety and security in the country.

Many police officers were given certificates of appreciation for fighting crime.

The office of the MEC also celebrated the day in Barberton police station on Sunday.
