TAMALE - Prominent England-based golden striker Didier Drogba is hoping to grab two major titles in west Africa next month.
The Ivorian senior national soccer team skipper is eyeing a gold medal in the 26th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
In addition, the Chelsea super star has once more been nominated for the 2007 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Glo Player of Year award.
Drogba, one of the most popular players at the Afcon, walked away with the prestigious award in Nigeria last year after two previous unsuccessful nominations.
The announcement of the best player on the continent last year will be announced at a function scheduled for Lomé, Togo, on Friday night.
Also nominated for the second consecutive year with Drogba is his Chelsea teammate Michael Essien, an influential member of the Black Stars of Ghana. Mali captain and chief striker Frederick Kanoute, who plays for Sevilla in Spain, has been nominated for the first time for the award.
"I'm here to win the best African player award again and Africa Cup of Nations title for my country," said Drogba.
Drogba, who has represented Ivory Coast 41 times and grabbed 28 goals, was in the Ivorian team that won a silver medal at the previous tournament after losing 4-2 on penalties to the hosts Egypt in 2006. The two countries failed to score after extra time.
The first and last time Ivory Coast lifted the title was in 1992 in Senegal when they beat Ghana 11-10 on penalties.
