Mbeki told to crack the whip

The Young Communist League (YCL), the youth wing of the SACP, has called on President Thabo Mbeki to dismiss all security cluster ministers for the crisis in the country's criminal justice system.

Speaking to journalists yesterday after the league's three-day lekgotla in Johannesburg, YCL national secretary Buti Manamela said Mbeki must fire Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula, Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils and Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota for what he called a "worrying crisis" in the cluster.

Manamela said the crisis was due to the suspension of NPA chief Vusi Pikoli, the dismissal of former intelligence boss Billy Masetlha and the stepping aside of national Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

Asked by a journalist to specify the mistakes made by Lekota's department, Manamela was at pains to come with a clear answer.

However, he accused Lekota of failing to properly integrate former non-statutory forces like Umkhonto we Sizwe, Apla and others into the national defence force. He also accused Lekota of ill-treating the military veterans from these forces by sending them from pillar to post about their dues.
