The threat last week by the Atteridgeville Bus Service to stop its operations between the township and Pretoria from next month could be a huge blow for commuters.

The threat last week by the Atteridgeville Bus Service to stop its operations between the township and Pretoria from next month could be a huge blow for commuters.

The company resorted to this tough stance after claiming the Gauteng department of transport owed it more than R25 million in subsidies.

The threat, if carried out, could also result in heavy job losses at the company, which operates 125 buses. The company has now turned to the high court for relief.

This dispute could long have been defused if senior officials had kept cool heads and done their job. About 20000 commuters, the bus company's workers and their families cannot be made to suffer because of an apparent bungle by inept officials.
