Why haste over Scorpions?

The ANC is wasting no time in ensuring its conference decision to get rid of the Scorpions is carried through as a matter of urgency.

The ANC is wasting no time in ensuring its conference decision to get rid of the Scorpions is carried through as a matter of urgency.

The two-day government lekgotla ending today is expected to accomplish the mechanism for disbanding the elite crime-fighting unit by June.

The big question is: why is the ruling party in such a hurry to shut down an agency with a successful record in the fight against crime when lawlessness is such a serious problem in our country?

The opposition says the reason the Scorpions must die is because they have not been afraid to act against even high-ranking ANC members who fall foul of the law. Their corruption case against disgraced police chief Jackie Selebi is a case in point.

DA leader Helen Zille has been most scathing in her criticism of the move, saying its aim is to "protect prominent ANC members from corruption charges". UDM leader Bantu Holomisa accuses the ANC of abusing its power and is threatening legal action.

The ANC has yet to convince the nation as to why disbanding the Scorpions is such a high priority.

It has also done nothing to dispel fears of a sinister motive for its actions.

The timing for the demise of the Scorpions could not be worse, considering their case against Zuma for alleged fraud, corruption and racketeering.
