A teacher at a high school in Limpopo is accused of fathering a child with a 17-year-old pupil in his class.

The teacher is also accused of awarding the pupil a fraudulent progress report after she failed.

The teacher, of Nkgopoleng Bakoni in Ga-Matlala near Polokwane, has allegedly previously appeared before the school governing body (SGB) for the same offence with another pupil.

But his alleged offence was allegedly ignored and rejected by the school principal.

Another teacher at the school said yesterday that the teacher, whose name is known to Sowetan, started dating the pupil in May 2006 when she was in Grade 9.

"He gave the pupil R100 for breakfast one day and offered to give her a lift home after lessons and since then they have been an item," the teacher said.

"She was dating another pupil at the school, but dumped her boyfriend for the teacher because he gave her money and a free pass at the end of the year.

"When we advised him that it was wrong to date pupils, he always gave us the run around," added the teacher.

One of last year's matriculants, Immaculate Mailula, said: "It is public knowledge that he [the teacher] has a child with her.

"She told us she is tired of dating young boys who are useless. She told me she would rather date a sugar daddy than date school pupils of her age."

On a visit to the school at 9am yesterday, pupils had already gone home and only a few could be seen in a classroom.

The pupil's classmates said she went home but her parents said she was at school.

The school principal, Winny Matsi, refused to speak to Sowetan.

Teachers at Lebeko High School in the Phalaborwa area were also accused by pupils last year of awarding progress reports to female pupils in exchange for sex.

A teacher at Modipe High in Tzaneen was recently allegedly found having sex with a pupil he had given a fraudulent progress report after she had failed.

In January this year, teachers at Lambalati High School in Malelane in Mpumalanga were accused of impregnating a total of 34 pupils in one year.

Limpopo education department spokesman Ndo Mangala said teachers were second parents to pupils in school.

"They are entrusted by parents to guide and educate their children," she said.

By law, dating pupils is a serious, punishable offence which could result in dismissal.

"We will obviously investigate the allegations and if true, drastic measures against the teacher would be taken," Mangala said.
