Despite Eskom's load shedding, BHP Billiton's Hillside aluminium smelter in Richards Bay achieved record production during the six months to end December.

Its Mozal smelter managed to equal its previous record during the period despite power problems, the world's largest mining company said yesterday.

Manganese alloy producer Samancor also achieved record production during the year.

South African coal production dropped following July's sale of BHP Billiton's Koornfontein coal mine, along with its 1,5 million ton per annum Richards Bay Coal Terminal entitlement to a BEE consortium.
