Mama Angel visited Nanga Vhutshilo in Dlamini, Soweto, to give cheer to disadvantaged children.
The occasion was the monthly food distribution day for child-headed families and others affected by and infected with HIV-Aids.
Mama Angel gave out 60 bags of flour donated by Sasco.
Nanga Vhutshilo means choose life. The centre has a community action department which looks after orphaned, vulnerable and child- headed households.
Its aim is to:
l Help the children to grow up and become productive members of the community;
l Promote moral regeneration through family structures;
l Assist in the prevention of HIV infection;
l De-stigmatise HIV-Aids; and
l Promote positive-living education.
Nelisiwe Nkabinde, the auxiliary social worker at Nanga Vhutshilo, says they give hampers to 110 families and 225 children.
"We are sponsored by the Department of Social Development and Bellington's. We also have 11 child- headed families," Nkabinde said.
"The fight against HIV-Aids will last a long time - but we are surely getting there. Children who have lost parents to the pandemic are very aware of the cause and this changes their mindset. We still have a long way to go and need to have interventions in place for vulnerable children."
The centre has a library, which is used by children who are enrolled in the after-care project. Volunteers help them with their studies and homework. They then receive a meal before they go home.
"We take care of the basic needs of the children. We also assist primary care-givers on raising children who are not their own.
"We also help the guardians in acquiring documents for themselves and the children so that they can access grants," Nkabinde said.
