Angry students at the Durban University of Technology yesterday marched to the vice-chancellor's office demanding that students owing last year's tuition fees be allowed to register.

The students owe the institution R15,5million in unpaid fees.

They are unable to register for this year as the institution has withheld their results. The majority of students who owe fees are National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) beneficiaries.

The students claim the scheme only paid half their fees.

The angry students demanded that the management respond to their grievances immediately.

After they waited almost two hours outside the management offices, vice-chancellor Professor Roy du Preez came out and promised to meet his management team to find ways of addressing the students' grievances.

He said he would report back to the students by Monday next week.

Student representative council spokesman Mthunzi Gumede said should the management fail to come back to them with a satisfactory solution, the students would close down registration centres at all the campuses on Tuesday.

The students are also angry that registration fees have been increased to R2500. - Sne Masuku
