The Australian-born Ledger had an appointment for a massage at his residence in the upscale SoHo neighbourhood, New York police spokesman Paul Browne said. A housekeeper who went to tell him the massage therapist had arrived found him dead on Tuesday afternoon.
A crowd of paparazzi and onlookers gathered outside the building, where several police officers guarded the door. The medical examiner's office planned to conduct an autopsy yesterday.
Ledger moved to the US at 19, turned away from teen films and built a career on more challenging roles.
