Rising levels of inequality and poverty are a reality we cannot wish away. I speak as a privileged South African, who at least has a job, food and roof over my head. But to the majority, this is just a dream. Some don't even know where their next meal will come from.
Rising intolerance levels are just symptoms of fear and anger. Failing to cope with a myriad socio-economic problems drives many to desperation. Xenophobia is an outlet to channel these frustrations. A wrong assumption is then made, that foreigners are the reason for all our miseries.
Unfortunately, xenophobia won't solve anything but will exacerbate matters. South Africa is hurting deeply.
Liberation has lost its meaning, as many can't even afford basic food items like bread. People can't understand why others seem to be enjoying the fruits of liberation while others are trapped in poverty.
When you are hungry, you stop rationalising and begin to think with your stomach. This is the reality the politicians don't understand. Moments of despair call for compassionate and brave visionaries. This is what we need right now - hope.
