North West province is planning to dig deep into its pockets in the quest to host some of the major national and global sporting events.
This is after the Local Organising Committee announced that North West will host the World Cup announcement celebrations on May 15 2010.
On May 15 2004 Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced that South Africa will become the first African country to host the World Cup in 2010.
Kennedy Mosiapoa, the North West 2010 World Cup provincial coordinator, said they wanted the celebrations to take place at Sun City.
Danny Jordaan, the LOC's chief executive, said the Sun City event was one of their official activities. Jordaan, who is in Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations, said they were planning to make it one of the biggest sporting events.
Mosiapoa said the North West provincial government was excited to be hosting the event, which is expected to attract thousands of people.
"We have already started with some of the preparations for the celebrations, it is part of our strategy to bring major events to North West.
"We all know that KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have been spending a lot of money to host major local and international sporting events.
"Such events are good for the community in that they also help in terms of boosting the economy of the host province. The tourism industry is booming.
"Our brothers and sisters in Botswana will also be coming. They are working hard to attract one or two countries to set up training camps there.
"We are in discussions with Tim Modise [the LOC's communications and marketing director] as part of our preparations for the event.
"We will be in a position to make an announcement once all the things have been finalised," said Mosiapoa.
Speaking at a provincial 2010 World Cup summit last year, North West Premier Edna Molewa said they will also be bidding to host the 2010 World Cup final draw.
